TUNNEL VISION CHALLENGE

Do you have Tunnel Vision?

You might if you often look around and wonder, wouldn’t it be a lot easier if I could get from Point A to Point B without the hassle of crossing busy roads, intersections, or other obstacles. Tunnels may be your answer!

The Boring Company (TBC) invites you to submit your proposal for a tunnel project up to 1 mile in length with a 12-foot inner diameter. TBC will select a winner from the proposals submitted and construct the tunnel free of charge. The tunnel can be a Loop tunnel, a freight tunnel, a pedestrian tunnel, a utility tunnel, a water tunnel, or any other use case where a tunnel would be useful. Prufrock is designed to construct mega-infrastructure projects in a matter of weeks instead of years - so let's build!

Evaluation Criteria:

  • Usefulness: How big of a problem does this solve? If it is a Loop tunnel, how much time is saved per rider and in aggregate? If it is a freight tunnel, how much time is saved per container and in aggregate? Etc.

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Level of support and enthusiasm from relevant stakeholders (provide letters/statements of support)!

  • Technical, Economic, and Regulatory Feasibility: Must be physically reasonable to build, within TBC's standard per-mile tunneling costs, and be able to be permitted in a reasonable amount of time

Submission Requirements:

  • General description of proposed tunnel and rational for construction

  • Projected benefit (e.g., time savings per user, cost saving per vehicle, etc.) and and in aggregate (provide data to support your assumptions)

  • Location/map of proposed end points of the tunnel, including the owners of the relevant land and right-of-way

  • Bonus: Any available data on subsurface conditions (geotechnical, utilities, etc.) along the proposed alignment

  • Submit via tunnelvision@boringcompany.com.

Timeline:

  • Submissions Due: February 23, 2026

  • Winner Announced: March 23, 2026

Notes:

  • Submissions can be entered by any entity type - individuals, companies, governments, etc.

  • All decisions, including selection of the winner, will be made at The Boring Company's sole discretion.

  • The Boring Company reserves the right to cancel or modify the challenge without notice - for example, The Boring Company could modify the challenge to select multiple winners or to select zero winners.

  • The Boring Company plans to pay for the tunnel construction and buildout; payment for related infrastructure (e.g. an artistic showpiece in a Loop Station) will be discussed with the winning project team.

  • The high-level descriptions (e.g. "Half-mile Pedestrian Tunnel in State X") of the submissions will likely be made public on this website.
